Clay Pot Ice Cream Cone

By , About.com Guide

Decorate a clay pot so it looks like an ice cream cone - submitted by Doodle.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 - 2 1/4" Clay pot (this will be the cone)
  • 2 - 2 1/4" Styrofoam balls (these will be the ice cream)
  • One tooth pick
  • Thick white glue
  • DAP drydex spackling (please read warning, if any, on this product)
  • Dimensional paint
  • Patio paint (yellow, brown, and whatever color you want ice cream to be)
  • Brush on matte sealer
  • Saran wrap
  • Picture of an ice cream cone (this really helps)

Instructions:
1. Clean pot. Allow to dry completely.

2. With dimensional paint, put horizontal, and verticle lines on outside of pot, only below rim of pot. Allow to dry completely.

3. Mix the yellow and brown paint. Start with yellow and add a little bit of brown until you get the color you want.

4. Paint pot. Be sure to paint inside the rim about one inch down. Allow to dry.

5. Glue one styrofoam ball into pot. I used a good bit of glue.

6. With a spoon, scoop out a little bit of the second ball so it will sit down over the first ball a little bit. Put some glue onto the toothpick, stick it into the first ball. Now add glue to top of toothpick and around the area where you scooped out the foam, and press second ball onto the pick. Allow that to dry for about fifteen minutes.

7. Put some saran wrap around the cone. This will keep it clean while you are applying the spackling. In a small plastic cup, thin about three tablespoons full of spackling with a few drops of water so it is easy to apply to balls. Cover each ball. You can apply spackling with your finger or use a plastic spoon or knife. I wear rubber gloves while I am handling spackling. Now apply globs of spackling at bottom of each ball. This will be the extra ice cream that always hangs over when it is dipped. Allow to dry thoroughly. This could take over night. You can add more spackling when first coat is dry if you are not satisfied with the first results. It is better to add two thin coats of spackling than one very thick coat.

8. Decide what color you want your ice cream to be. Using acrylic paint, paint your ice cream. When it is dry, brush on a coat of matte sealer.

Be sure the kids know this is not real. My husband wanted to eat the first one I made. I told him they were for decorations for the tables for September at the Senior Citizens Center where I volunteer.
