Electric Bread for Kids

By Sherri Osborn, About.com

Here are two yummy and fun-to-make bread recipes for your bread machine, from Electric Bread for Kids: A Bread Machine Activity Book (Art & International Productions, 1998).

Electric Bread Twister

Your kids will flip for this decadent peanut butter-filled treat with chocolate icing!

Dough

1 cup water
3 cups flour
3 Tbsp. dry milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup butter
1 1/2 tsp. flat rise yeast

Peanut Filling

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup powdered sugar
3 Tbsp. butter

Icing

1 cup powdered sugar
3 Tbsp. water
2 Tbsp. soft butter
2 Tbsp. cocoa powder

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix the water, flour, and dry milk together, add the sugar and salt, and then fold in the butter and yeast. Place this mixture in your electric bread machine and press the start button. An hour later, the dough should be ready to be rolled out into a rectangle with a rolling pin.

Next, make the peanut filling by mixing the peanut butter and powdered sugar together, and adding in the butter. Spread the filling onto the rolled-out dough and fold it in half. Cut it into 1-inch strips, slightly twist the strips, and bake it in your preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes.

While the filled dough is cooking, make the icing. Mix together the powdered sugar, water, soft butter, and cocoa powder. When the dough is finished baking, let it cool slightly and then spread on the icing.
