I work at a daycare center, and we recently had our preschoolers working on an ongoing art project. First we had them paint sheets of newspaper in red, orange, yellow, purple, blue and green, then we discussed fruits which have these colors.
After the paint dried, we traced shapes on the newspaper, circle for apple and orange, we drew a bunch of cherries, a slice of watermelon, etc.......two sides for each fruit and had the children cut them out. We put them together, painted sides out, punched holes along the sides and had the children lace yarn through them using a whipstitch...... we then stuffed them with wadded up newspaper.
We hung them on our bulletin board and called it "fruit salad".....it is cute as a button, and gives them many steps to complete and works on lots of different small motor skills.
