Here are a few helpful hints to help you have fun and make your haunted house the best it can be! These factors cannot be stressed enough!

  • Creating a good haunted house takes time. We had only a few props our first year, and added a few more every year after that. Be patient and work with the time and materials you have. People will look forward to something new being added every year!

  • Enlist the help of friends, neighbors, and family members. We always had at least a dozen people helping us, and everyone always had a blast!

  • Warn your 'actors' never to touch anyone who comes through your haunted house/yard. This is dangerous and could even lead to legal trouble!

  • Some people, especially small children, might not be able to handle being scared by your haunted house and 'actors'. Encourage your actors to peak out from under their masks or remove them to give a small child their treat. Explain to the child that you are not a monster. You are just dressed up in a costume like them. Parents and the kids will appreciate it!

  • If you set up a more formal haunted house for people to walk through, think about posting signs warning people what they will find inside. You can also set an age limit for entering if you like. Our decorations inside the house were saved for people invited to a special Halloween party we had every year. Trick-or-treaters never entered the house, only the yard.

  • Although dim lights are essential to a great haunted house, make sure there is enough lighting so no one gets hurt!

  • Please remember, if you use dry ice do not allow it to touch anyone's skin. It can cause serious injury!

  • Fishing line usually tends to glow under blacklights. If you use it to hang props, make sure it isn't near any! For hanging props near blacklights, try black thread or yarn.
