Plaster of Paris Castings

By Sherri Osborn, About.com

Paul explains how to make a variety of plaster shapes that are perfect for pins, necklaces, and more.

Materials Needed:

  • Plaster of Paris
  • Plastic Candy Molds
  • Paint and/or Markers
  • Jewelry Findings and/or Magnet strips (optional)

Instructions:
My wife has been doing this for many years for the Cub Scouts.

Go to a cake store that sells the plastic candy molds. Select the molds of your choice, she has over 100 different ones. If for a group, you may want to purchase more than one of the same mold.

Mix plaster of paris according to directions, do not get it too thick since it dries quickly. Pour into candy mold. Let set and harden. When dry, remove from mold and allow to dry thoroughly. Clean excess plaster off edges.

Use paint or permanent markers to decorate the item. If small enough, you can glue a magnet on the back and use as a fridge magnet. If for a child does it, have them date & sign the rear of the item.
