What a fun book! The look and feel of the book is enough to impress you. This hard covered volume would surely catch your eye from a distance with it's bright, water colored spine. The smooth cover is splattered with festive colors and a quaint picture. Once you open it, you will be awed once again. It contains pages and pages, 136 to be exact, of entertaining ideas for each season of the year.
This book is more than a craft book. It is more than a children's book. Every adult I have showed it to paged through it and commented on all the wonderful ideas shared. It is full of songs, poems, finger plays, games, crafts, recipes, riddles, movement activities, and more. They marveled at the fresh ideas. They gushed over verse and songs they remember hearing as children. The reminisced about the games that brought back fond memories and the craft project they made for grandma. Way back when...
This book is broken down into 4 sections: Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer, and All Year Round. While the seasonal categories are self explanatory, the All Year Round grouping is a hodgepodge of entertaining ideas. It contains fun activities and songs kids can relate to. Learn a poem about the weather. Sing a song about saying goodbye. Read a poem about a birthday. Try some alphabet tongue twisters. Act out a finger play about numbers. Learn to knit by muttering this cute rhyme. This section of the book offers a wide variety of activities.
Betty Jones, a teacher among other things, does a wonderful job compiling the material for this book, and adding her own creative ideas. Her training in child development is evident. Make sure you read the acknowledgments she includes and the introduction to get the full picture of what this book offers!
