Free Halloween Costume Pattern and Instructions

By , About.com Guide

Find out how to make this simple yet creative Halloween costume. Follow these directions submitted by Kathy Herrmann and you can dress up as a poodle.

Materials Needed:

  • 4-5 Rolls of crepe hair (white or ecru)
  • Stocking skull cap
  • White sweatshirt and sweatpants (cuffed)
  • White gloves
  • White makeup
  • Black crayon makeup
  • Black slippers or slip-on sneakers
  • Approx. 1/4 yd. of piece of white faux fur (short napped) or stretch white faux fur ribbon about 1-2" thick.
  • Two pink clasped barrettes w/bows (medium size)
  • 1" Pink sequined stretch ribbon (for collar)
  • Spirit gum and/or bobby pins

Instructions:
"I pulled this costume off last year, using my white poodle as the model, and received quite a few compliments as humans tried to pet me. The hardest part was ensuring the crepe hair (a tightly woven braids of wool used to create beards, mustaches, sideburns and special effects) covered my whole head without my natural hair showing.

BODY: Measure wrists and ankles and add 1"-2" of fur to measurement. Cut white faux fur or ribbon in strips (approx. 2" wide) and glue or stitch loosely onto each wrist of sweatshirt and each ankle of sweat pants.

FACE: Using white make-up, apply to face and neck generously, excluding tip of nose. Use black crayon makeup, to make a V formation at tip of nose. Use a thin line of black crayon makeup, and draw two black lines from corners of mouth in an upward swing, then one short line at an angle at each end of mouth line.

COLLAR: Stitch hook and eye onto ribbon, and place around neck. You can also stitch a gold piece to ribbon in front for tag.

HEAD: Place stocking skull cap on head, ensuring all natural hair is not visible. Unroll and pull 2-3 rolls of crepe hair apart and place on top of skull cap, evenly but not real fluffy. Secure crepe hair to skull cap by using spirit gum or white bobby pins. Coif or trim as necessary with scissors.

EARS: Use one roll of crepe hair and cut TWO 3" to 5" inch pieces, these will be used for the ears. Pull apart crepe hair until fluffy and ensure each ear is even in length and width. If not, cut to make evenly. Place one ear piece in one barrette leaving 1/8" on top and clasp barrette onto crepe hair of skull cap. Once ears are in place, mesh 1/8" of top into crepe hair, so it looks natural.

With remaining crepe hair roll used from ears, cut crepe hair in 2-3" sections. Tie ends together using string or rubber band. Pull apart crepe hair for fluffy shaped ball effect. Place on top of head, forward to your brow. Secure with bobby pins and continue to fluff as needed or trim as necessary.

Wear black slippers and white gloves for paws."
