Connie in New York explains how she transformed pockets cut from a pair of jeans into a cute purse.

  • Age Guideline: 8 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 45 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 pair old jeans with back pockets and good zipper
  • Iron on patch (optional)
  • Needle and Thread or Sewing Machine
  • Straight Pins
  • Scissors

Instructions:
Cut out the back pockets, leaving about 1" around each pocket. Remove the zipper from front fly. Cut inseam along legs keeping the seam as one long strip.

Start out by sewing the zipper centered at top of both pockets. Press the seam open and stitch down on each side of zipper. Open the zipper half way. Fold you project so the the zipper is on the fold and the right side of both pockets are facing in. Line up the sides and bottom and pin the to hold them in place.

Trim the inseam piece to whatever length you want your strap to be. Take one of the ends and, going into the top of the purse where you opened the zipper, push that end out of one of the sides of the purse, just below the zipper. You may have to remove a pin or two. Pin this in place. Do the same with the other end of the inseam piece on the other side of the pocket, just below the zipper.

Now you can stitch around the sides and bottom of the pockets to form your purse. Use about a 1/2" seam allowance. Go over the stitching twice just to reinforce it. Make sure you do not stitch over any part of the strap except the end that is pinned in the seam. Clip the corners and edges if desired.

Finally, you can turn your pocket book right-side-out through the zipper opening. For a finishing touch you can iron or sew on a patch and tie a knot in the top of the strap.

Turn pocket to front through zipper opening.
