Learn how to crafts personalized ornaments by recycling old CDs. Use photos for your kids, your pets, or even just seasonal pictures. You can also use these techniques to recycle Christmas or other greeting cards.

  • Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

Cut a 10-inch piece of ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a loop. Put a dab of glue onto the back of the CD towards the outside edge. Press the ribbon loop into the glue to make the hanger.

Trace around the CD onto a piece of felt. Cut out the felt circle. Spread glue over the entire back of the CD. Center the felt circle on the glue and gently press it in place. This will cover any writing and also the ribbon ends. It will be the back of your ornament.

Cut around the figure in the picture you are using. You can cut it into a rectangle shape, circle, or whatever you want. For a fancy edge, you can use pinking sheers.

Trace the picture onto a piece of felt. Cut out the shape, making it about 1/2-inch wider than the picture. Glue the photo onto the piece of felt so you can see the felt on all sides. Glue this onto the center of the CD, making sure you cover the hole completely. Instead of felt, you can use fancy paper if you like.

Let the glue dry on your ornament and then it can be hung up. You can hang it in a Christmas tree, in a window, or on the wall. I think it would also make a cute package topper.
