- Age Guideline: 8 Years and Up
- Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.
- Thin Rope (any color or colors)
- Coffee Cans
- Misc. Supplies to Embellish (Optional)
- Craft Glue
Make sure the coffee can is clean and dry. If there is a paper label, remove it.
Spread a generous amount of craft glue onto the coffee can, you can do a small area at a time if you prefer, starting at the bottom of the can. Starting with one end of the rope, at the bottom edge of the can, hold it in place next to the can and start wrapping the rope around the can. Make sure each time you go around the rope lays snug against the rope below it. You will cover the entire can in this manner. Once the outside of your can is full, cut off any extra rope. Jackie suggests using a pin to hold the ends of the rope in place until the glue dries. She also recommends burning the ends of the rope to keep it from fraying.
Once the glue is dry you can decorate your can with anything you have on hand! These make decorative holders for toothbrushes, hairbrushes, pens and pencils, paintbrushes, and more. Tins with lids can be used as banks by cutting a small slit in the lid for money to be deposited. They also make beautiful, inexpensive gifts!
Suggestion from Sherri: Instead of rope, you could use thick yarn or even ribbon! You might want to try tacking the ends of the rope to the coffee can using a hot glue gun just to hold it in place until the stronger craft glue dries.
