- Age Guideline: 4 Years and Up
- Time Required: 45 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.
Materials Needed:
- Construction Paper
- Yarn
- Wire Hanger
- Cotton Balls
- Paint, Crayons, or Markers
- Cellophane Tape
- White Glue
- Scissors
Instructions:
You are going to make 4 kites. Choose one piece of paper for each kite that is about 5 1/2-inches by 8-inches (this amounts to half a sheet of normal sized paper). Fold each piece of paper in half so it measures about 5 1/2-inches by 4-inches. Cutting through both piece of paper, cut diamond, kite, shapes out of each paper. You should end up with 8 kites.
Choose one piece of paper the same size as above to be a sun. Fold it in half and cut out a sun shape so you have two suns of the same size.
At this time, you should color or decorate your kites and suns however you like. You will be gluing two kite pieces together, back to back, so you only need to color one side.
Cut 5 pieces of yarn, each one ranging in size from 12-inches long to 20-inches long. Glue one end of each piece of yarn, sandwiching it between two kite shapes and the sun shapes. Tie the other end of the yarn pieces, spread out, along the bottom edge of the hanger. They should all hang at different lengths. Trim off any extra yarn.
Use tape and white paper to cover the hanger with paper. This will cover the end of the yarn. Glue cotton balls all over the paper so that the hanger ends up looking like a large cloud. You can now hang up your mobile using the hook on the hanger!
The kite mobile pictured here was made by Adam K. in Georgia. His mom says he is 3-years-old and very proud of his spring project.
