By Sherri Osborn, About.com

Crafting can be a great way to relax, have fun, and spend quality time together as a family. If you like to experiment with different craft supplies and techniques or if you prefer to buy pre-assembled craft kits or try the newest crafting fad, it can be expensive. Here are some ways you can save money on your crafting without stifling your creativity! After you read my money saving tips, take a moment to share money saving craft tips.

Saving Money at the Craft Store

There are many strategies you can use when it comes to saving money when you go to the craft store. Keep these money saving techniques in mind the next time you go shopping for craft supplies and you can hopefully save enough money to put aside for a rainy day. If you have a favorite money saving tip, please share it and it might be included in this list... Read More

Think Outside the Craft Store

Sometimes, the best way to save on craft supplies is to go to stores other than craft stores. Some products can be found elsewhere for a fraction of the price. Depending on the craft supplies you need, consider looking at a home improvement store, office supply store, or large discount department stores. Another great place to look for items you can use in your craft projects is the dollar store.

Second Hand Craft Supplies

Look for crafting supplies at thrift stores, garage sales, church sales. When I say craft supplies I am not necessarily talking about what might be referred to as typical craft supplies. Sure, you might find a collection of unopened craft kits, spools of ribbon, bags of buttons, and skeins of yarn, but you should also dig a little deeper in the racks and shelves. Check out what you can find... Read More

Talk to Businesses

You might be surprised at what you can get from different businesses. Local businesses especially are often happy to help out, especially if you are looking for supplies to use in a classroom or with a community group such as girl scouts or boys scouts. Here are some tips to try... Read More

Finding Craft Deals Online

While you can find good deals online sometimes, buying craft supplies online might not always be your best bet because of the cost of shipping. There are a few places you can look for deals. You can also check out some free offers... Read More

Swapping Craft Supplies

Let’s face it, most of us have bought craft supplies or kits on a whim and brought them home only to pick them up a week later and say, “What the heck was I thinking?” If you have a collection of craft kits and supplies you don’t plan on using, why not try to swap them for craft items you will use! Here are some suggestions to help you get started... Read More

Sharing Craft Supplies

Another way to save money on craft supplies is to share them. If you know other crafts, parents, leaders of community groups, teachers, and other people that might be interested, you can try to form your own buying club. You can pool your resources and your money, buy in bulk, and share the supplies. You can find several sources for buying larger quantities of craft supplies online... Read More

Using Trash as Craft Supplies

Not only is recycling good for the environment, it can help save you money. I have gathered together a large selection of projects you can make from jars, cans, cardboard, orphaned socks, and even items from nature. You can craft green and save some green... Read More

Use What You Have

While you might think using what you have should be included with the recycling crafts above, this is a little different. If you find a craft project you want to make, but don’t have all of the supplies you need change the project to work with the supplies you have on hand. For example, if a craft project calls for wiggle eyes and you don’t have any, you can draw or paint on eyes or use something else like beads or buttons. If a project calls for using craft foam, you can substitute felt or card stock. Be creative with your substitutions!

Make Your Own Supplies

Making your own craft supplies can help you save some money. It will also give you a reason time to spend together as a family being creative rather than shopping. Put on an apron or smock, cover your work surface with an old tablecloth or newspaper, and mix up a batch of paint, glue, or clay. You can also make your own coloring crayons, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and coloring books... Read More

Staying Organized Can Save You Money

Believe it or not, staying organized is a good way to save money. If you know what you have, you will not waste money on buying things you don’t need. I try to keep a list of everything I have and everything I need. When I go shopping, I stick to my list. I also keep a list of all the books and patterns I have so I don’t end up with doubles! Over the years I have learned some tricks when it comes to craft supplies and staying organized, and I am happy to share these with you... Read More
