- Age Guideline: 3 Years and Up
- Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.
- Large Shoe Box
- Construction Paper
- Cellophane Tape
- Craft Glue
- Utility Knife
- Unwanted Junk Mail
Cover the shoe box with construction paper. Both the lid and the main part of the shoe box are covered and then put together so that the lid can be put on or taken off as desired. Tape works better for attaching the construction paper to the box than glue does. Use a utility knife (adults only) and cut a horizontal slit along one of the shorter sides to act as a 'mail slot'. Use pictures, letters, and words cut from old magazines and glue to decorate the mail box as desired.
As you get unwanted mail, you can let your child slide the mail into their own mail box. You can also slide in scraps of construction paper, magazine pages, and other small papers. While any kids will enjoy 'getting mail', the real fun can come with cutting up the mail. Have the child sit at a table and let them open their mail and cut it into tiny pieces using a pair of scissors. They can also tear it into pieces. Try to have them cut it over the mailbox lid so the pieces stay contained. This is a great way to have younger kids practice their cutting skills.
The mail scraps can be recycled, discarded, or even save for future projects by putting them into small zip-top bags or other containers.
