Recycled Snowman Craft
How to Recycle Trash Into a Snowman

By , About.com Guide

Michelle Honeycutt explains how she transformed empty baby Puff containers into snowmen.

Materials Needed:

  • Baby “Puffs” container (label removed)
  • Drill
  • Hot glue
  • Toothpick
  • Orange paint
  • Toilet paper or paper towel roll
  • Brown pipe cleaner
  • Ribbon
  • Sticky-backed black felt
  • Permanent black marker
  • Black paint
  • Paint brushes

Instructions:
An adult must prepare the plastic Puff container by drilling two holes for arms in the appropriate position. Poke the brown pipe cleaner all the way through the container so that it is hanging out of both sides of the container. Bend the pipe cleaner in any desired way so that they look like arms.

To make the snowman's hat, cut a 2-inch piece from the toilet paper roll. Remove the lid of the plastic container. Using hot glue, affix the toilet paper roll piece onto the lid. Hot gluing is best done by an adult. Use the black marker to color the brim of the hat (lid) black because paint doesn’t stick to the plastic well. Paint the toilet paper tube section of the hat black. Once the paint is dry, screw the lid back on the container.

Cut several very small circles out of the black felt. Peel the backing off of the felt and affix the circles onto the snowman for eyes, nose, and buttons. Paint the end of a toothpick orange. Break the end off and hot glue it on the snowman for a nose. Finally, tie the ribbon around the snowman’s neck for a scarf.

Of course, you can make this snowman your own by using different supplies. Some variations that Michelle shared are to use felt or fleece for the scarf, draw on the facial features and buttons, or fill the container with rice/beans and glue the top on to make a fun holiday shaker.
