Buttons the Snowman

Buttons the Snowman

Submitted by Carol Edwards
Carol Edwards, from Kids Crafty Creations, named her happy snowman Buttons; however you can name your snowman whatever you like. It is easily made from foam bowls and your embellishments, your snowman will be a cherished decoration or homemade gift for years to come.

  • Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:
Note: Using a thicker craft glue will allow you to decorate your snowman sooner. Do not use a glue gun because it will melt the foam.

The body of the snowman consists of 3 sets of bowls glued together. To weigh down the snowman, add about a cup of dried beads or small pebbles to the first bowl only. Add glue to the lip of that bowl. Flip another bowl upside down and glue the top edges of the bowls together. Continue gluing the remaining bowls to create a total of 3 sets of glued bowls. Stack the 3 sets of bowls, adding glue between each set.

Glue 2 eyes to the top bowl. Cut a 2" piece from the orange pipe cleaner. Bend it in half and twist to make the nose. Push the end of the nose into the bowl about a 1/4". Glue the 5 black buttons onto the face in the shape of a smile.

Glue 4 buttons on the front of the snowman. To make an arm, cut 2" from a black pipe cleaner. Lay the short piece of pipe cleaner horizontally across the longer piece of pipe cleaner. Wrap the shorter piece around the longer piece to make the "fingers." See the photo below. Make 2 arms.

Push the ends of the the pipe cleaner arms into each side of the middle set of bowls. Add some glue around the pipe cleaners where they enter the bowls. Let dry.

The hat is made from a large tube that is tied at the top. To make the tube, cut a rectangular piece of felt that fits the diameter of the head of the snowman plus 2" and is 8" high.

Create the tube by overlapping and gluing the short edges of the rectangle. To make the brim of the hat, fold the bottom edge of the tube up 2" and glue. About an inch from the top of the tube, gather the felt and tie with a piece of yarn or ribbon. Glue the hat to the top of the snowman.
