Fisherman's Ruler Craft

Sherri Osborn
If you have a favorite fisherman, or a fisher woman, they will surely love getting one of these fisherman's rulers as a fun gag gift. Everyone knows that fishermen love to tell fish stories and talk about the "big one" that got away. This, um, generous ruler will really help them stretch their stories!

  • Age Guideline: 12 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 20 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed to Make a Fisherman's Ruler:

Craft Instructions:

Have you ever heard the expression "The big one that got away"? When a fisherman talks about the fish they catch, they can sometimes exaggerate when explaining how long it is. This silly gag ruler is created to make it look like a 6-inch long tongue depressor is 12-inches long. Now, when they use this ruler to measure their fish, the numbers will match the length they claim their fish was.

Start out by laying a ruler down by your tongue depressor so you can make your inch and half-inch marks along the top of the tongue depressor. It worked out almost perfect for me to make a small mark every 1/4 of an inch. You will want 25 marks altogether, evenly spaced along the top of the tongue depressor. Use a pen or paint and thin paint brush to make your longer inch and shorter 1/2-inch lines. Use the picture here as a guide.

Carefully write or paint the numbers onto the ruler. Also write "Fisherman's Ruler". If this gag gift is for a female, you could write "Fisher Woman's Ruler" if you like. Let the ink or paint dry and then you can present this ruler as a fun gift.
