The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Ellen suggest collecting some fairly flat rocks and painting half of each rock white. Once the paint is dry, put the rocks in a plastic jar.

Kids can shake the jar and dump out the rocks. On a piece of paper, have the kids write out an equation using the different combinations that show when the rocks are dumped out. For example, if they were using 7 rocks, and they dumped out the rocks and 4 of them had the painted side facing up, the kids could write out the equation 4+3=7.

These rocks can be used to work on a variety of different math concepts.
