Recycled T-Shirt Tote Bag Pattern

Kim teaches us how she transformed an ordinary t-shirt into a Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag by sewing one seam. You can use these same techniques to make a t-shirt tote bag for other occasions!

  • Age Guideline: 10 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 15 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:
Take a t-shirt and cut off the neckline, about a 1/4" up from the seam, leaving 14/" of the sewn part of the neckline on the shirt. Cut off sleeves in the same manner.

Turn the t-shirt inside out and sew the bottom edge closes, about a 1/4" from the bottom edge. Turn t-shirt right side out and there is your bag!

You can make a more girly version of this tote bag (like the black one pictured here) by adding fancy ribbon and beads. Follow above directions above and cut off the neckline and sleeves. Instead of sewing the bag closed we will insert ribbon so we can tie it.

We will use the hem in the bottom of the shirt to feed a piece of ribbon through. Turn the shirt inside out. Looking at the bottom hem on the inside of the shirt cut two slits, directly across from each other. Make sure you only cut a hole in the inside folded up hem. Cut two pieces of ribbon and thread a piece of ribbon from one hole to the other. One of the ribbons should run through the hem in the front of the shirt and the other should run through the hem on the back side of the shirt. It is easiest to use a safety pin, connected to one end of the ribbon, the thread the ribbon through the hem.

Once you have the ribbon going through the hem, tie a bead onto each ribbon end. Pull the ribbon ends so the bottom of the t shirt starts to gather. Now, LOOSELY tie the ribbons one set at a time around the base of the hem. Next push the beaded ends through the hole in hem (this is why we loosely tied the bottom). Now turn the t-shirt right side out and pull on each of the beaded ribbons one at a time to tighten the bottom hem. The outside of the bag now looks really neat with just the ribbons hanging out of the bottom.
