Share Your Story: Cardboard Tube Challenge

From kaitlin

Name of Project

Toilet Paper Roll Octopus

Ages This Project is Suitable For

ages 8 - 14 or can be simplified for ages as low as 5.

Approximate Time Required to Complete This Project

About 1 hour

Materials Needed

black and white felt for the eyes or you can use googly eyes

any color paint you want

a toilet paper roll

tissue paper/toilet paper

white glue

scissors

Instructions

Take the toilet paper roll, and stuff the tissue/toilet paper in the top, making the top rounded. Paint the roll and paper whatever color paint you choose, and wait for it to dry. It won't take that long, trust me. When its dry, you can take the scissors and cut 7 little slices about 1-inch in the bottom of the toilet paper roll, you will want to make 7 slits to make 8 tentacles. Now you are ready to make the eyes. If you have googly eyes, just glue them on and you have a pretty little octopus. If you have felt for the eyes, (felt eyes makes them look adorable) then take the black felt, and cut out 2 small circles, but not too small, and glue them to the octopus where you want the eyes to be. Next, cut out 2 much smaller circles of white felt and put them on the black circles, in the upper right side. Congratulations! You have made an awesome octopus!

Tips and Tricks

  • You can modify this project using model magic instead of paint, and hot glue works much better than regular glue, but dangerous for younger kids
  • When painting the octopus, use vivid colors that stand out.
  • This project can also be modified using another color of felt for the eyes instead of black.
