Decoupage Sewing Table

My sewing table

Name of Project

Decoupage Sewing Table

Ages This Project is Suitable For

Tween/Teenager/Adults

Approximate Time Required to Complete This Project

One -two days depending on the size of the table.

Materials Needed

I used several different glues I had on hand, carpenter's, school glue, thinned with water.

Pretty papers, old calendars, pretty paper napkins, photo copied family pictures. Brown craft paper will look like leather.

Rubber gloves.

Baby wipes.

Sand paper

Fan / open window

Paint brush/ foam applicator (wider the better)

Hair spray/ or other spray glue

Scrapbook scissors

Podge of your choice( I used Mod)

Dough roller

Instructions

Clean table top.

Sand it to remove old finish and wipe down with water to remove dust.

While table is drying, cut with scissors or tear your papers, tearing gives the table top character.

Layout your photo copied pictures and papers to get the look you want.

Thin out your glues with water like a thin gravy, not runny, but easy to spread.

For pictures you have photo copied, apply hair spray evenly to keep the ink from smearing when you apply the glue/podge.

Spray glue will set your paper, but dries quickly.

I spread the glue/podge to the under side and edges of the table,

lay my first piece, smooth it out.

Use the dough roller to push out air bubbles.

Continue to add pieces and roll out bubbles.

Completely cover the table, edges and under the edge if you so desire.

Let dry, use a fan to speed up the drying process.

Put your applicator in a plastic bag and seal it, keeps it wet for the next step.

The thicker the paper, the longer it takes to dry.

Apply first coat of your sealer, let dry.

Apply second coat of sealer, let dry.

When the surface is not sticky start adding your glue/podge with a brush or foam applicator,

Since I use my table for sewing, it will get vacuumed and spot cleaned when needed.

Enjoy your table or whatever surface you decoupaged.

Tips and Tricks

  • I use cheap baby wipes.
  • Ziplock bag for my brushes between coats.
  • Scrapbook scissors for nice edges.
  • Tearing paper for character.
  • Fan to speed up drying process
  • Foam noodle/foam pipe insulation for the edge of sewing/craft table to keep round beads/supplies from rolling off and also to stick straight pins when I'm sewing.
  • Cut the round foam in half then half that piece, glue to the edges of the table or use heavy duty velcro so it can be removed later.
  • I used pictures of wedding gowns I made and other projects that I crafted. Vacation pics, family pics.
  • Any pictures you like will be great to enjoy.
