Feather Plume for Pirate Hat or Headband

Pirate Hat w/ Plastic Bag Plume

Name of Project

Feather Plume for Pirate Hat or Headband

Ages This Project is Suitable For

8 w/ parent supervision

Approximate Time Required to Complete This Project

10 minutes

Materials Needed

White plastic grocery bag

White chenille stem

Sharp scissors

Instructions

1. "Square" the bag by removing the handles and bottom seam, as close to the bag as possible.

2. Cut the front from the back at the side seams, discarding (and recycling) the printed side.

3. Quarter the blank side and stack one on top of the other.

4. Holding the layers as one, cut into a feather shape, 12" long; about 1" at the bottom tapering out to 3" at the top.

5. Weave the chenille stem in about 1/2" increments down the middle; fold the ends over like a staple to keep the bag from sliding off (about 1/8" should be enough).

6. Sides: With sharp scissors, make snips from edge up to the chenille stem (leave about 1/4" space) and about 1/8" apart. Be careful not to cut the previous strips. (Hint: Use gravity...hold the feather in front of you to let the sides hang down rather than working on a flat surface). Top: Make "pie" cuts to make the turn.

7. ""Fluff" the feather to separate the layers.

8. Insert into hatband or headband, hiding tip as necessary.

Tips and Tricks

  • The sharper the scissors, the better.
  • For better results, use thin plastic bags, rather than "Target" type.
  • Experiment with other colors.
  • Make several for a headdress.
