Name of Project
Grocery Bag Tote Bag
Ages This Project is Suitable For
Any body who can crochet
Approximate Time Required to Complete This Project
20 hours
Materials Needed
75 grocery bags
sharp scissors
size K crochet hook
darning needle
Instructions
Fold grocery bag side to side 3 times. Cut off bottom. Cut across into 3/4 - 1 inch strips. Open into rings. Weave these rings into a chain. This is called plarn. Roll chain into a ball. I roll 15 bags into one ball. Use the plarn to crochet like you would use yarn. You can follow any tote bag pattern. I made up my own pattern. You can make a solid tote bag or make stripes, or even use random rings to make a semi-tie-dyed effect. When finished use darning needle to weave in the end of the plarn. Then cut the plastic canvas to fit into the bottom of the tote bag if your pattern has a flat bottom. As needed, weave together more balls of plarn to finish your project.
Tips and Tricks
- Shiny, thick bags are harder to crochet with
- You can use the plarn to crochet anything. I have also made a back pack and a kindle carry bag.
- I keep the balls of plarn in zip top bags to keep them from unrolling while in storage.
- I try to fold bags when i get them and keep them in square tissue boxes so they are ready when i need them. They take up a lot less space for storage.
