How to Curl Ribbon

Read these tips about curling ribbon.

By , About.com Guide

To curl the ribbon typically used to wrap gifts and tie ballons, you simply hold the ribbon tightly and drag it across the blade of a pair of scissors.

To curl most fabric ribbon, spiral wrap the desired length of ribbon around a dowel, pencil, wooden spoon handle, or other similar object making sure it does not touch or overlap. What you use will vary depending on the effect you are looking for. Secure both ends of the ribbon using a small piece of tape or even clothes pin.

Once you get your ribbon wrapped and secure, generously spray the ribbon with spray starch. Make sure all parts or the ribbon are covered and then let the ribbon dry completely. It is best to stick it somewhere so that the ribbon stays upright and is not touching any other surface while it dries. Once dry you can slide the curled ribbon off of the dowel.

Different kinds of ribbon will react differently so you may want to test this method on a small piece before you cover too much ribbon!
