Grinch's Too-Small Heart

Sherri Osborn
If you are familiar with the Grinch's story, you know that of the reasons he hates Christmas was because hi heart was too small. Learn how you can make a picture of his heart before he found the Christmas spirit.

  • Age Guideline: 6 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:
Cut 2 pieces of construction paper into identical frames by cutting out the center and leaving a 1-inch border (figure 1).

Cut 2 pieces of wax paper, each one about the same size as your construction paper frames. Use this heart pattern, if desired, and cut out a small heart from red construction paper. Place the heart centered on one of your pieces of wax paper (figure 2).

Put your wax paper and heart on an ironing board with a towel or newspaper underneath it. Use the kitchen grater to make some white crayon shavings. Sprinkle the crayon shavings onto the wax paper around the heart, making sure none gets on the heart.

Lay the other piece of wax paper on top of the heart; try to line up the edges of both wax paper pieces as much as possible. Put a few paper towels or pieces of newspaper over the top of the wax paper. Use an iron on top of the paper towels or newspapers to press the 2 pieces of wax paper together, trapping the heart in place. (Irons vary so experiment with the setting that is best for you - I use a medium setting with no steam).

Finally, you can glue your frame pieces around the wax paper to make it look like the x-ray of Grinch's heart (figure 3).

If you want, you can use these techniques to also make the Grinch's heart after it grew by using a much larger heart shape.
