You can turn your template or design window to different angles to see how you like it best. You can also center the middle of the design (the white part) or experiment with it being off center. My rule when it comes to most kinds of crafting is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. Whatever way you want it is THE right way!
Use small pieces of cellophane tape or even blue painter tape to hold your cardstock still on the template. The part of the cardstock facing up will actually be the back of your design so to not worry about tape marks.
Now we can start layering the paper or fabric strips...
